Well, boys and girls, it’s time to get your costumes ready, get in the atmosphere and prepare to scare and be scared; because Halloween is back. Again it’s that time of the year where monsters run free, ghouls and vampires swarm the streets side by side and all you see on TV is scary movies. And speaking of those, here are five of the best Halloween classic movies for a truly chilling evening.
Scream (1996)
First on our list is a scary movie that celebrates other scary movies and after seeing it, you’re sure to have a few viewing ideas for next Halloween. It features Neve Campbell as Sydney; a teenage girl who’s terrorized by a crazed serial killer with a passion for horror films one year after her mother was murdered.
This is the perfect movie if you want to genuinely get scared this Halloween, but be advised: if you watch it alone at night in an empty house, unless you want a heart attack it is best advised that you unplug your phone. You’ll see why.
Hocus Pocus (1993)
If you’re looking for a Halloween scary movie that actually takes place on Halloween, look no further than “Hocus Pocus”. Disney’s film (yes, that means you can watch it with your kids) features Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy as the Sanderson sisters, three witches who were executed for practicing dark witchcraft 300 years ago who come back on Halloween night to spook the town of Salem.
It’s up to two teenagers and an immortal cat to stop them, in this classic Halloween film to be enjoyed with your whole family.
Beetlejuice (1988)
Next stop is another classic, Tim Burton’s colorful masterpiece “Beetlejuice”. A recently deceased couple (so Halloweeny from the get-go) come back to haunt the home they once lived in, only to find this annoying devious ghost named Beetlejuice also tagged along for the ride and is now trying to scare away the house’s current inhabitants.
Aside from being a great Halloween movie it also might get you to dress up like Beetlejuice at your office’s Halloween party next year. It’s basically a license to annoy people because hey, you’re just being true to the character.
Halloween (1978)
Back to some serious scares with a genuinely chilling movie, “Halloween” is a John Carpenter directed masterpiece and one of the most representative films of the horror genre. It also created the “slasher film” subgenre, which basically explains itself and kind of gives away the main occupation of the movie’s protagonist.
Michael Meyers is a murdering psychopath who escapes a mental asylum 15 years after murdering his sister and comes back to his hometown to return to his old habits. A classic horror film and also another costume idea for next year.
The Addams Family (1991)
Speaking of great Halloween costume ideas, there are about ten of them. Inspired by the cartoons by Charles Addams and the 60s TV show with the same name, every day seems to be Halloween in the Addams family home. Join a wild and hilariously morbid ride with classic characters like Gomez, Morticia, Pugsley, Wednesday or Lurch, as they go on a morbid quest to find their long-lost relative, Uncle Fester. With a mix of great actors, compelling story and dark humor, “The Addams Family” is an absolute Halloween classic.
So here they are, from the wacky and funny to downright nightmare inducing scary, from movies you shouldn’t watch alone or with any kids around, to movies you can watch with your whole family, these are the best five picks for a classic Halloween experience.
